Kuwaiti Short Film Review: Gone by Jack Al-Mazeedi

Post by tarekjammal

gone

So as you’ll see below, Gone isn’t a film that takes itself too seriously, and feels more like a guy having fun at home making films (which is a great thing by the way, and it’s something you take for granted when you begin working on larger productions).

The film pokes fun at the idea of Vimto being an addictive product while borrowing the ever so famous scene from Taken to sell his point.

In reality this is more of a skit than a film, even though it’s clear that the director is influenced by Christopher Nolan, and the first 30 seconds or so are quite exciting and well paced. Things do go a bit downhill from there and enter cheesy territory (though the strange trip into the character’s oddly spiritual relationship with vimto was interesting). Another thing I appreciated was that some of the shots look like thought was put into it (a lot of local films tend to just shoot the script and not care about where the camera is placed or why it’s placed there) and the director did set up some frames with a bit of care.

In the end, it’s just harmless fun on the director’s part. Not really my taste. I can’t really recommend it to anyone, but I hope he continues to work on himself a bit more.

My advice to the filmmaker:

Kuwaiti cinema is still in its beginning, however if we keep trying to emulate hollywood or western films we’ll never get anywhere. We’re still trying to find out what the Kuwaiti Cinematic Language is, but int he mean time, diversify the kinds of films you usually watch. Take a chance and watch some foreign films. Watch independent cinema, and you will leaner a ton about low budget filmmaking.

Anyway, I appreciate the effort put into films of any kind, but next time, take things a bit more seriously and work harder on your craft!

An illustrator took some of the most popular GOT characters and drew them in Disney’s style. They’re really good, the one above is of John Snow but check out the others [Here]

320birthday

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ is a horror comedy about vampires who invite a documentary crew to follow them around similar in style to The Office and Parks and Recreation. Judging by the trailer below it looks hilarious.

The Foodroom

If Aaron Sorkin (Sports Night, The West Wing, The Newsroom) wrote a TV show featuring McDonald’s as a workplace you would end up with The Foodroom.
